The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) government has issued a warning to investors about a fraudulent cryptocurrency project known as the "National Hong Kong Coin." The project came to authorities' attention after the discovery of a fake social media account on X impersonating Hong Kong's Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu.
The counterfeit profile used an actual photo of the region's leader and spread false information claiming Hong Kong was launching its own cryptocurrency—the "National Hong Kong Coin," supposedly built on the Solana blockchain.
The promotional post described this as a "historic event for all regional investors" that would usher in "a new era of digital technology and economic prosperity for Hong Kong."
To appear more convincing, the scammers included details suggesting the project had government backing and was intended to strengthen the region's position in the global financial system.
Official Response
Hong Kong authorities emphasized that:
- The account has no connection to John Lee Ka-chiu
- Information about a cryptocurrency launch is entirely false
- This is an attempt by scammers to profit from Hong Kong investors' interest in cryptocurrency
