Tether CEO Unfazed by Potential US Ban: Plans New Compliant Stablecoin

Is Tether worried about US stablecoin legislation? Not really, says CEO Paolo Ardoino.

While stablecoin legislation in the United States has many foreign issuers concerned, Tether's CEO Paolo Ardoino remains surprisingly calm about potential impacts on the world's largest stablecoin. In fact, he's already planning ahead with a strategic alternative.

Regulatory Landscape Shifting

Current stablecoin bills moving through Congress—the House's STABLE Act and Senate's GENIUS Act—would require foreign issuers like El Salvador-headquartered Tether to meet strict requirements:

  • Comply with Bank Secrecy Act anti-money laundering provisions
  • Submit to rigorous reserve audits

Critics have long suggested Tether would exit the US market entirely rather than face these requirements. The $144 billion stablecoin giant has never undergone a full financial audit, fueling persistent questions about whether sufficient reserves back each USDT token.

Ardoino dismisses these concerns as competitor desperation, claiming Tether maintains "the highest level of compliance" regarding law enforcement cooperation. He noted the company is in discussions with multiple "Big Four" accounting firms about a potential full audit.

Two-Pronged Strategy Emerging

Rather than adapting USDT to meet US requirements, Tether appears to be pursuing a dual approach by focusing on emerging markets while exploring compliant options for regulated environments.

This strategy mirrors Tether's approach in Europe, where Binance recently delisted USDT due to non-compliance with new EU regulations. Ardoino revealed that Tether has invested in European companies developing compliant stablecoins.

What's your take?

Do you think Tether's strategy is smart business or a sign they're unwilling to fully comply with regulations? Will this approach help or hurt crypto adoption in the long run?
